Materials

The peony standard

Since 2019, 100% of our swimwear fabrics have been made from recycled content. Uniquely to peony, this includes our printed fabrics, our custom textures and even our inner linings. This is the peony standard. Every piece. No exceptions.

REPREVE®

Our textured swimwear fabrics are developed in-house exclusively using REPREVE® regenerated fibres. These fabrics are unique to peony, as we design from the yarn, determining the weave, weight, stitch, colour and design. Made from 100% recycled plastic bottles, our use of REPREVE® gives new life to plastic waste that would otherwise end up in landfills or the ocean, emits reduced greenhouse gases and conserves energy and water in the process.

ECONYL® Regenerated Nylon

Our printed swimwear styles are made from ECONYL® yarn, a 100% regenerated nylon fibre made from nylon waste otherwise polluting the earth, like fishing nets, fabric scraps, carpet flooring and industrial plastic rescues from all over the world. Regular nylon is made from non-renewable petroleum oil which is a significant contributor to global warming. By using ECONYL® regenerated nylon instead of standard nylon, we are giving nylon waste a new life. This process reduces the global warming impact of nylon by up to 90% compared with material made from oil.

Lining

Lining makes up roughly 50% of swimwear fabric consumption and is often overlooked. Since 2019, our swimwear has been lined in our custom luxe lining made from 90% REPREVE®.

Waste diversion

So far and with your support, our use of recycled swimwear fabrics has diverted approximately 47,616kgs of post-consumer waste from landfills.

Organic Cotton

We use Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton. This fabric is soft, durable, natural and biodegradable. Grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilisers, organic cotton uses significantly less water, relying predominantly on rainwater. Organic cotton reduces environmental footprint and promotes safe work and better livelihoods for farmers and their families. GOTS certified organic cotton is considered the leading global standard on sustainable processing for the textile industry.

ECOVERO™

ECOVERO™ viscose fibres are derived from wood pulp sourced from FSC or PEFC certified sustainable sources. This innovative fabric is certified eco-responsible with the internationally recognised EU Ecolabel, a stamp of environmental excellence only awarded to products and services which have a significantly lower environmental impact. Nearly all the chemicals used during the production of ECOVERO™ are recovered and reused, and compared to conventional viscose, the production of ECOVERO™ causes 50 percent less emissions and uses half as much energy and water.

Linen

Peony linen is 100% European Flax® Certified and made from French yarn. European Flax® certification guarantees traceability for premium linen fibre. This linen is a natural sustainable fibre, cultivated without irrigation and GMO free. Flax is grown without the need for herbicides and pesticides. There is very little waste in the farming of flax as other parts of the plant such as the seeds can be used for different products. Our linen is biodegradable, long lasting and becomes more beautiful with every wear.

Hemp

The hemp plant is a densely growing plant, meaning it fights off competing plants on it’s own, avoiding the need for harsh chemical herbicides . Hemp naturally reduces pests, so no pesticides are necessary. Incredibly, the hemp plant returns up to 70% of the nutrients taken from the soil. Not only is hemp gentle on the environment, it also requires very little water to grow. Hemp fabric has a hand feel similar to linen and it softens to become more beautiful with every wear.

Breaking it down

For the 2022 year, our material percentage of volume is as follows. For swimwear, 100% of our fabrics were made from recycled nylon or recycled polyester. For resortwear, 100% of our fabrics were made from one, or a combination of these responsibly sourced fibres; ECOVERO™, GOTS certified Organic Cotton and European Flax® Certified Linen.

Packaging

Considering the outside as much as the inside, we use compostable and biodegradable packaging throughout our supply chain. Your peony pieces will be lovingly hand wrapped in compostable tissue paper, sealed with a compostable peony sticker. Our mailer bags are made from waste, using only renewable solar power, no water, acid or bleaches. They are designed to be re-used, but at the end of their useful life can be recycled with soft plastics and are otherwise inert in nature. Our shipping labels are also compostable with adhesive made from renewable materials. As a certified carbon neutral business, we invest in environmental projects to offset our deliveries, so your order will arrive to you carbon neutral.

All the little things

We believe all the little things make a big difference over time. Our swing tags are made from recycled and FSC certified wood. Our swimwear hygiene liners are made from FSC certified wood-based bioplastic, making them compostable and biodegradable. Even the mini bags that carry the removable straps for our bikini tops are made from compostable and biodegradable materials.

How to measure

Bust Circumference

Thread tape measure under your arms, around your back and across the fullest part of your bust. Once you have the tape measure lined up, relax your arms at either side

Waist Circumference

Your natural waistline is the narrowest part of your waist, above your belly button and below your rib cage. Run the tape measure around your waist (like a belt), keeping it straight.

Lower Hip

Stand on a level surface with your feet together. Measure the fullest part of your bottom and upper thighs, not around your hip bones. Ensure the tape is straight around your body.

Helpful Tips

If you don't have a measuring tape, you can use a piece of string and then measure the string length with a ruler. Tape should be horizontal all around, and fit close to the body. These are tips to measure your body, not the garment.
